AmaZulu Football Club is a distinguished South African professional football club, headquartered in the coastal city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Established in 1932 by Zulu migrant workers under the original name, Zulu Royals, the club holds the unique distinction of being the oldest operating entity in the South African Premier League. The club's iconic nickname, Usuthu, is drawn from a powerful Zulu war cry, embodying the core values of pride, resilience, and deep cultural heritage.
In October 2020, the acquisition by Zungu Investments Company bolded a new era for the organisation. Driven by a clear and ambitious mandate, AmaZulu FC is strategically focused on ascending to become the leading and most successful sports brand within South Africa and across the African continent. This forward-looking strategy includes a target of uniting a dedicated base of over five million supporters by the club's centenary in 2032.
AmaZulu Football Club's origins date back to the early 1930s, initially established as the Zulu Royal Conquerors. In 1932, the club was formally renamed Zulu Royals by King Solomon kaDinizulu, who bestowed authorisation for the use of the royal shield and established guardianship through the Zulu Royal House, thereby cementing its profound cultural heritage. The club's identity and its now-iconic green and white colours were established while headquartered at the eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal.
Following periods of internal division in the late 1960s, the organisation underwent a restructuring, officially registering as Zulu Royals United in 1970. The following year, the team was granted entry into the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), succeeding African Wanderers. AmaZulu immediately demonstrated its competitive stature, concluding its inaugural season in sixth place and achieving a significant milestone by capturing the 1972 NPSL league title.
The year 1974 marked a significant transition as the club formally adopted the name AmaZulu Football Club. During the establishment of the National Soccer League in 1985, AmaZulu emerged as a consistent contender, reaching several cup finals under the management of coach Clive "The Dog" Barker, culminating in the triumph of the inaugural Coca-Cola Cup in 1992, followed by a third-place league finish in 1993.
After a series of ownership changes, the club permanently reverted to the AmaZulu Football Club designation in 2005 following extensive consultation with its supporter base. A transformative new era commenced in October 2020 with the acquisition by Sandile Zungu, initiating a strategic focus on establishing a sustainable and successful football institution. Following the formal introduction of King Solomon kaDinizulu, the club officially adopted the Zulu Shield as its central emblem, symbolising its royal affiliation and the adoption of the "Usuthu" war cry.
For several decades, the club maintained a traditional aesthetic, utilising a crest that prominently featured the shield rendered in shades of bottle green, white, and blue.
The club's branding during this era was defined by the introduction of a modernised crest that prominently incorporated the shield.
To commemorate its 93rd anniversary, the club unveiled a refreshed, minimalist, and contemporary logo. This design aimed to update the overall brand aesthetic while retaining the core shield element through a cleaner, modern presentation.
Born in Umlazi Township in 1967, Sandile Zungu subscribes to the core values; courage, respect, honesty, and integrity, instilled during his time at Hilton College.
He holds academic credentials including an MBA from UCT GSB (1995 BSc), (Mechanical Engineering) from UCT (1988), and a certificate from Harvard Business School (2000).
Considered an entrepreneur, Zungu founded Zungu Investments (Zico) in 2002, a diversified industrial holdings group with interests in sectors such as manufacturing, property, and resources.
He champions business empowerment as a means to achieve economic advancement and inclusive participation.
Sinenjabulo currently serves as the Executive Director and incumbent CEO of AmaZulu FC (Pty) Ltd, overseeing the club’s commercial and head office operations.
Her key responsibilities encompass daily club management, securing and managing sponsorships and partnerships, stakeholder relations, and the commercialisation of the business.
Zungu-Ntuli holds a Business Science (Marketing Hons) from the University of Cape Town and an International MBA from the IE Business School (Madrid, Spain), contributing to her 15+ years of extensive experience in marketing and branding across various industries.
She previously served as CEO of Qhubeka Forensic Services from 2017 to June 2021, where she was previously Marketing Manager, she remains a Non-Executive Director and majority shareholder in the black female-owned firm.
Mfundo is currently an Associate at Zungu Investments Company (Pty) Ltd, where his primary duty involves assisting the executive deal team with transaction origination, assessment, and portfolio management support. Since joining Zungu Investments in 2018 as an Investment Analyst, he has contributed to numerous acquisitions, disposals, share buy-backs, capital raises, and the establishment of a private equity fund. Currently, he is on secondment at Mettle Corporate and Specialised Finance (since August 2020), where he is involved in corporate finance advisory, capital origination, and structuring with local and international financial institutions.
Bathabile is a qualified Chartered Accountant CA(SA) holding a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree from Nelson Mandela University. She completed her articles at KPMG (2010) in the Consumer Markets and Information Divisions. Prior to her current role, she gained extensive experience as a Senior Product Controller at Absa Capital, focusing on the Commodities and Client Capital Management Desks. Currently, as Chief Executive Officer of Zungu Investments Co., Bathabile directs the company’s financial strategy, objectives, and budget, while overseeing fund investment and risk management.
Charl Ferreira is a Chartered Accountant CA(SA) and an Executive Director at Zungu Investments Company (Pty) Ltd. He holds a B.Com Honours degree in Accounting from Nelson Mandela University. Prior to joining Zungu, Mr. Ferreira gained extensive experience in the Investment Banking Division at Nedbank Capital, serving in both the M\&A Advisory and Mining & Resource Finance teams. At Zungu Investments, he is responsible for managing the investment portfolio, leading acquisitions, disposals, capital raisings, and finance-based lending, particularly within the mining sector. He also represents Zungu Investments on various boards and sub-committees.
With a career spanning 42 years at Grindrod Limited since 1979, Mahmood Dawood Simjee ("Sims") possesses an unparalleled, comprehensive understanding of shipping and logistics operations, having risen through the ranks to serve as Chief Executive Officer for both Ocean Africa Container Lines and Grindrod Intermodal. His commitment to mentorship and community is also evident through his involvement in football: after playing during the apartheid era, in recent years he steered Ashley United FC in the Motsepe League.
