Usuthu’s MTN 8 opponent revealed

AmaZulu will face Stellenbosch FC in the MTN 8 quarterfinal.

The fixture, which is a home game for Stellenbosch, will be played at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday 3 August. Kick-off is at 3pm CAT.

The two sides met three times last season, twice in league-play and also in the Carling Knockout Cup. Stellenbosch got the better of Usuthu in all three encounters, bouncing AmaZulu from the Carling Knockout Cup in the first round with a 2-1 extra-time victory in October.

In the league, Stellies defeated AmaZulu 5-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in January before securing a second victory, winning 1-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium in April.

In the competition’s other opening fixtures, Orlando Pirates will face Polokwane City, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Richards Bay, and Sekhukhune United will begin their quest for the trophy TS Galaxy.

AmaZulu finished in 6th place in the Betway Premiership last season, qualifying for the MTN 8 for the first time since the end of the 2021/22 season.

The club’s last appearance in the competition yielded an impressive run as Usuthu met Orlando Pirates in the final in 2022. However, the campaign ended in heartbreak with a 1-0 loss to the Buccaneers courtesy of a 25th minute goal from Monnapule Saleng.

Usuthu have yet to get their hands on the coveted trophy and will be pushing to lift the title for the first time.
