Usuthu to compete in Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup

Zululand District is set to be an epicentre for festivities as Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup returns with a bang later this month.

This was revealed at a packed media launch that was successfully convened in Durban earlier today. The popular tournament is aimed at honouring and celebrating the International Icon and an IFP President Emeritus Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, for his impeccable leadership role.

The Legacy Cup which will be a draw card to visitors and soccer fanatics who will be flocking to Prince Mangosuthu Stadium at Ulundi on July 23. This flagship program which was coordinated by the municipality through the Office of the Mayor was last hosted in 2018 due to a pandemic that enforced the break.

Speaking at the launch, His Worship the Mayor Cllr Thulasizwe Buthelezi said the Legacy Cup will go a long way in developing and boosting the economy, social cohesion and promote tourism and investment in the Zululand area.

“This Legacy Cup celebrates the legacy of our leader, SA Stateman, and our global icon for the work that he has done in developing the communities in KwaZulu-Natal and democracy in the country.

This tournament not only honours the legacy of our leader but it will also showcase local talent, boost the local economy, promote Zululand tourism and kick-start all our sports activities for the year,” remarked the mayor.

Mayor also unveiled three PSL teams to compete in the tournament which are Mamelodi Sundowns FC, AmaZulu FC, Richards Bay FC and Zululand Eleven team.

Manqoba Mngqithi the Coach of the reigning champion (Mamelodi Sundowns) for the Legacy Cup said: “We don’t take this tournament of this magnitude for granted. Our wish as current holders of the Cup is to play two matches and we will do our level best in honouring this tournament.”

Simultaneously during the launch, Mr Philani Mabaso who is the Tournament Director, reiterated that they would ensure that the tournament meets the standard of the PSL. He announced that tickets will be available from this coming Friday at Ticket-Pro at R20.

This major sporting event was first staged in 2017 and is a brainchild of AmaZulu FC, who wanted to use soccer in honoring the legacy of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The Build-up will kick start on Thursday 21 July with Amahubo Symposium, Coaching Clinics on Friday and activations around town in Zululand.

Zululand District Municipality would like to thank all mayors, soccer associations, media houses, soccer legends and coaches for their participation thus far and look forward to the culmination of the final games later this month.
