AmaZulu FC were held to a 0-0 draw by TS Galaxy at the Bidvest Stadium in their opening DStv Premiership match of the 2022-23 term on Sunday afternoon.
Usuthu will now take on Supersport United on Wednesday as the KwaZulu-Natal giants look to register their first victory of the new campaign.
AmaZulu started the match slowly with the Galaxy seeing a lot of the ball in the visitors’ half, but coach Sead Ramovic’s charges couldn’t create clear-cut chances.
Coach Brandon Truter’s side grew into the match gradually, but they were limited to long-range shots. AmaZulu came close to scoring when George Maluleka’s fine strike from a free-kick shaved the top of the net.
The best chance of the first half fell for Lindokuhle Mbatha, but the Galaxy winger failed to beat goalkeeper Veli Mothwa from close range and the score was 0-0 during the half-time break.
Galaxy were the better start after the restart with Bathusi Aubaas forcing Mothwa into a save before the Bafana Bafana keeper gathered a dangerous curling cross from Ibrahim Seedat.
Mhango, who was nominated for the 2022 CAF African Goal of the Year, tried to beat Melusi Buthelezi with a long-range shot from the centre circle, but the keeper was well-positioned to make a save.
Both teams made changes in the latter stages of the game as they searched for a late winning goal. Substitute Masilake Phohlongo saw his deflected shot being saved by Mothwa who ensured that the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
