The towering centre back started his youth career at Shooting Stars, before playing for another amateur club, Flamengo FC. Mthethwa signed up for the KZN Football Academy in 2013 and played for their partner club Durban FC. Orlando Pirates signed the former South Africa youth international in 2016 and he was loaned out to Richards Bay, and Chippa United. He joined AmaZulu after being released by Pirates midway through the 2024/25 season.
