AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has highlighted the challenges faced by his team as Usuthu target a top-four finish in the Betway Premiership.

The KwaZulu-Natal giants were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Chippa United in their latest league match, which was played at Buffalo City Stadium in East London last weekend.

Zwane has indicated that Usuthu players have a mentality problem that they need to overcome as we approach the business end of the current season.

“Chippa is one game we should’ve got three points on, but we conceded goals that we should’ve have,” the 51-year-old tactician said.

“That has been the story of our season: we are Gift of the Givers. It is a case of mentality. You look, for instance, at the chances the players create.

“It is sometimes that the awareness is not there. We try to rectify these things, but they are still haunting us, and they are very costly … it was a chain of mistakes even in the Chippa game.”

Despite the defeat to the Chilli Boys, AmaZulu remained seventh in the league standings and a win over Richards Bay on Friday would see Usuthu consolidate their position in the top-half.

“We are in the top eight already … but now what is happening is we are putting ourselves under pressure. We gave Chippa a lifeline to be closer to us,” Zwane added.

“If we don’t win the next game we are out of top eight. Our target is position number four [as] set by the president, but those chances keep fading because we keep hurting ourselves.”

The match between AmaZulu and Richards Bay will take place at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Friday. Kick-off is at 19h30.
