AmaZulu FC head coach Romain Folz was left to rue his side’s missed chances after an encounter against Dondol Stars on Wednesday.
Usuthu suffered a 5-4 defeat on penalties to Chaba Refete following a 1-1 draw in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 encounter at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
“First of all, congratulations to the opponents, they deserve the win,” Folz said.
“During the match, we put ourselves in trouble by missing so many chances. We hit the post twice, had four or five shots yards away from the net, and missed the target.
Hendrick Ekstein gave Usuthu the lead when he netted in the 54th minute, but Revaldo Fox levelled matters for the ABC Motsepe League side four minutes later.
“When you are that poor at finishing, you are opening the door for anything to happen,” Folz continued.
“You are also opening the door for extra time and penalties. If you are not clinical in your execution tactically, the opponent will be [clinical], and that is what happened today.”
AmaZulu were reduced to 10 players in the second-half of extra-time as Keagan Buchanan was sent off for receiving a second yellow card.
“In terms of creative sequences offensively, we were fine, but in terms of finishing, we were extremely poor,” the French tactician added.
“As much as I want to congratulate the opponent, I think we gave them an opportunity to go through, and we can only blame ourselves.”
Usuthu will be keen to bounce back to winning ways when they face Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium in a DStv Premiership match on March 17.
