Usuthu head coach Arthur ‘Phakimpi’ Zwane believes AmaZulu FC have what it takes to extend their unbeaten run against local rivals in the Betway Premiership, ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated KwaZulu-Natal derby against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium.
AmaZulu have had the upper hand against Richards Bay this season, securing victories both home and away to claim all six points from their encounters. They also emerged triumphant in their first-round clash against Royal AM, sealing a confident 2–0 win in March.
However, since Manqoba Mngqithi took the reins, Abafana Be’sthende have become a different beast. Quietly climbing the ranks, they now lurk just outside the top eight, currently sitting in 10th position.
“For us, it’s more like a six-pointer,” Zwane said. “We know the importance of getting maximum points. I don’t want to repeat myself in terms of where we are and where we’re supposed to be. We had ample time to consolidate our position on the log, but dropping points in three consecutive games has put us under pressure.”
AmaZulu and Golden Arrows previously played out a goalless draw in the first round at Moses Mabhida Stadium. While Zwane acknowledges the challenge of playing on a less-than-ideal pitch, he insists that results are what truly matter.
“We’ve put ourselves in this situation, like we did in the past, and now we have to get ourselves out,” he stated. “We’re going to Hammarsdale, and regardless of whether the pitch is playable or not, our focus is on grinding out a result.”
Despite recent setbacks, Zwane remains optimistic about his squad’s readiness and morale.
“The preparations are going well so far. The spirit in the camp is good, and everyone is looking forward to the game,” he said. “Yes, we’ve got a few injuries here and there, but I don’t think they’ll have a big negative impact. We have players who’ve been waiting for their chance, and I believe they’re ready to step up and grab the opportunity with both hands, ” he added.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30.
