Usuthu show character against Chiefs

AmaZulu FC and Kaizer Chiefs drew 1-1 in an action-packed DStv Premiership match at the iconic FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Therefore, Usuthu remained eighth on the league standings with Bonginkosi Ntuli scoring the equalising goal for the KwaZulu-Natal giants.

It was a lively start to the game with both teams intent on attacking from the first whistle and Amakhosi opened the scoring when Buchanan scored an own goal.

The former Chiefs central midfielder tried to block Keagan Dolly’s square pass, but the ball found it’s way into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the home side in the 20th minute.

Having scored with a stunning goal from outside the box against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, Sphsihle Maduna’s long range effort flew over the crossbar in the 34th minute as AmaZulu looked to equalise.

The score was 1-0 to Chiefs during the half-time break courtesy of Buchanan’s unfortunate own-goal.

Usuthu pushed for the equalising goal after the restart, but they were frustrated by Amakhosi’s tight defence and they resorted to long range shots with Siyethemba Sithebe firing over the crossbar from range.

Chiefs were reduced to 10 players on the hour-mark when Cole Alexander received his second yellow card of the match after fouling Thabo Qalinge and the experienced midfielder was sent off.

The visitors then upped the tempo and they managed to level matters when Andre De Jong’s cross was turned home by substitute Ntuli to make it 1-1 in the 77th minute with the Amakhosi defence exposed.

It was end-to-end stuff in the closing stages as both teams pushed for the winning goal, but AmaZulu were also reduced to 10 players after Samkelo Magwazela picked up his second yellow card and he was also sent off.

Neither side was able to grab a late winning goal and ultimately, the game ended in a 1-1 draw on the night with AmaZulu having fought back to deny Chiefs a win.
