AmaZulu FC bounced back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership when they secured a 1-0 victory over Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The KwaZulu-Natal giants remained 12th in the league standings, but they are now two points behind eighth-placed Kaizer Chiefs. Usuthu’s next game is against Orlando Pirates in a Nedbank Cup quarter-final match on 13 April in Durban,
The Citizens got off to a promising start and they threatened first through Taahir Goedeman. The 24-year-old attacker’s attempt was well-saved by Usuthu’s experienced goalkeeper Veli Mothwa just two minutes into the encounter.
The visitors looked dangerous on the counter which saw Keanu Cupido being sent off in the 26th minute after denying AmaZulu a clear goalscoring opportunity and City were reduced to 10 players. However, the Citizens contained Usuthu and the score was 0-0 at half-time.
The hosts did not sit back after the restart despite being numerically disadvantaged. Jaedin Rhodes looked to make an impact having been introduced at half-time and he set up Heaven Sereetsi whose effort was well-saved by Mothwa.
However, it was the visitors’ substitute who made an impact as Junior Sede Dion netted in the 71st minute to hand AmaZulu the lead – three minutes after being introduced. The goal sealed AmaZulu’s 1-0 victory over City on the day.
