2021-22 Term – Memela’s best-ever scoring season

Luvuyo Memela of AmaZulu celebrates goal during the CAF Champions League 2021/22 match between AmaZulu and Horoya

The 2021-22 season proved to be AmaZulu FC star Luvuyo Memela’s best-ever scoring season since he made his top-flight debut in 2015.

Memela scored nine goals across all competitions and he finished the campaign which saw Usuthu make their debut in the CAF Champions League as the club’s topscorer.

The left-footed playmaker hit the back of the net seven times in the DStv Premiership from 20 starts as he helped the Durban-based side finish seventh in the competition.

Also popularly known as Amigo, Memela also found the back of the net twice in the Champions League with both goals coming in the group stage of Africa’s biggest club football tournament.

Prior to the recent campaign, Amigo’s best scoring season was the 2020-21 term when he netted eight goals in what was also his debut term with AmaZulu after joining the club from Orlando Pirates.

The Cape Town-born star was even more lethal in front of goal during his days in the National First Division (NFD) – scoring 15 goals for Cape Town All Stars during the 2014/15 campaign.

Only out-and-out strikers Phumelele Bhengu (22 goals) and Charlton Mashumba (17 goals) hit the back of the net more than Memela in the NFD during that season.

His scoring exploits earned him a big move to Pirates where he spent just over five years before moving to AmaZulu in October 2020.

The Usuthu talisman will be hoping to reach double figures in terms of goals scored in a single campaign in the upcoming 2022-23 season.
